About St Barnabas Court

Location

St Barnabas Court is situated between Heigham Street and Dereham Road, a short distance west of the Inner Ring Road. Frequent buses run into the city centre along Dereham Road and Heigham Street, both a short walk from St Barnabas Court.

The accommodation

St Barnabas Court dates from the 1930s, but has more recently been enlarged and remodelled. Some of the earliest units have been completely rebuilt, with new blocks built as additional land became available over the past 20 years. There are 66 one-bedroom flats, two two-bedroom flats and one three-bed flat, all of which have individual gas fired radiator central heating and double glazing. Two bedroom flats are generally reserved for couples who request them, but may in certain circumstances be offered to individuals at the Society’s discretion.

Support facilities

The Society’s Scheme Managers provide a visiting support service to tenants that request a visit. Each flat is connected to the call system by means of pull cords in each of the main rooms. Pendants are available for those wishing for a higher degree of reassurance. The call system is monitored 24/7, and a mobile response is provided when necessary.

Medical facilities

There are two medical centres and a pharmacy within walking distance. Dentists and opticians are available within the city centre.

Shops, restaurants

There is a neighbourhood shop within a few yards of the scheme, with a wide range of retail shops and a Post Office on Dereham Road, including a local Co-op supermarket. The nearest large supermarket is just over a mile away, and Norwich City Market is about a 20 minute walk away. Dereham Road has a variety of fast food outlets as well as a number of public houses. Cinemas are located within the city centre.

Churches

St Barnabas Parish Church is just round the corner and the Catholic Cathedral is not far away. Other faiths are catered for nearby or within the city centre.

Facilities within the site

A comfortable social room with kitchen facilities is available where residents can meet for regular social activities. There is a laundry room containing good quality domestic washing and drying machines. The flats are arranged around small gardens with flower borders and lawns. There is a limited number of off-street car parking spaces which are available on a first come, first served basis. Tenants can also apply to the city council for on-street permits both for their own vehicles and visitors.
