Twenty New Affordable Homes For Rent For Older People Unveiled In Eaton, Norwich
A £2 million development of 20 new affordable homes for older people has been officially opened in Norwich.
Norwich City Council deputy leader and portfolio holder for social housing Cllr Gail Harris joined Norwich Housing Society chairman Carol Sangster in cutting the ribbon at Leander Court, off Bluebell Road in Eaton.
Funded by Norwich Housing Society with the help of a £600,000 grant from the City Council from Right To Buy receipts, the 15 one-bed flats and five two-bed flats have been built by specialist constructor of homes for older people, McCarthy & Stone.
“It is absolutely fantastic to be here and see these flats completed,” said Cllr Harris. “They are of a wonderful standard, and will be high quality affordable homes for older people in this part of the city.
“This is a really good example of a working partnership between the City Council and Norwich’s own specialist in affordable homes for older people, Norwich Housing Society. We are pleased to have been able to use our Right To Buy receipts to help bring this scheme into being.”
Norwich Housing Society chairman Carol Sangster added, “We are delighted to have been able to build such good quality affordable homes in this much sought-after part of Norwich. When Canon Lanchester founded Norwich Housing Society in the 1930s by building ten new homes in the city, he had a great vision, and this development is a continuation of that vision.”
The name Leander Court is named after the English shrub rose Leander, reflecting the fact that the site was once a rose nursery. The site will be Norwich Housing Society’s eighth scheme for older people in the city, bringing the number of this type of property it rents to 317.
