First Residents Move Into Brand New Affordable Homes To Rent For Older People

The first residents have moved into a new £2 million development of affordable homes to rent for older people in Norwich.

The keys to the first four of 20 new flats at Leander Court off Bluebell Road in Eaton were handed over by representatives from Norwich Housing Society, which has built the new homes with the help of a £600,000 grant from Norwich City Council from its Right To Buy receipts.

The 15 one-bed flats and five two-bed flats have been built by specialist constructor of homes for older people, McCarthy & Stone.  The new homes are now almost fully let, with the remainder of the residents due to move in over the coming weeks.

“This is the culmination of a big project to create 20 new affordable homes for older people in  this part of the city,” said Norwich Housing Society chief executive Mike Allen.

“All of the hard work in raising the funding, getting the scheme through planning, and project managing the construction becomes worthwhile when you get to hand the keys over to the people who will be calling Leander Court home.

“These are high quality affordable homes for older people in a very attractive part of the city.”

One of those moving into Leander Court was Audrey Robinson, who has been living off Earlham Road in the city’s Golden Triangle.  She said, “These are wonderful flats, and the location couldn’t be better, with all of the shops, post office and facilities of Eaton village centre right on the doorstep.

“It also feels like this is going to be a really nice community, and I am looking forward to meeting all my new neighbours.”

The name Leander Court is named after the English shrub rose Leander, reflecting the fact that the site was once a rose nursery.  The site will be Norwich Housing Society’s eighth scheme for older people in the city, bringing the number of this type of property it rents to 317.

Anyone interested in renting a home from Norwich Housing Society can register their interest at www.norwichhousingsociety.org, or by phoning their office on 01603 625078.  Homes are allocated in accordance with housing need and to those over the age of 60.
